Musk went to great lengths to demonstrate the “toughness” of the chassis’ “ultra-hard 30X cold-rolled stainless steel” exoskeleton, having an employee put it through its paces with a large sledgehammer. It didn’t leave a single mark. The armor glass windows didn’t fare as well, with both the front and back panes cracking into spiderwebs when a metal ball was thrown at them. However, as Musk was quick to point out, the ball did not make it all the way through the glass, so any potential passengers would still be safe inside.
Under the hood, the truck has some impressive capabilities. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds and can town more than 7,500 pounds uphill. The most high-performance version has a range of 500 miles per charge, plus 250 kilowatt charging speed for quick refueling. The 500-mile iteration will set buyers back $69,900, but the low-performance version is a more reasonable $39,900, albeit with only a 250-mile range and likely fewer bells and whistles.
